MIA DONAJ

Underwear as Outerwear (2025)

Clothing exists at the boundary between the body and the world. Garments typically worn beneath clothing, bras, lingerie, and other intimate layers, are brought to the surface, reversing the expected order of dress.

As layers accumulate, clothing shifts from following the body to obscuring it, until the body is reconstructed symbolically on the surface of the clothes themselves.

Through accumulation and inversion, these garments move progressively further from the body they are designed to follow and begin to manufacture an entirely new body.

The work plays with exhibitionism and voyeurism, offering the viewer increasingly visible signs of intimacy, and closeness while making the body itself increasingly inaccessible.
